In the shadow of Kendall Square, the most innovative square mile on the planet, a significant disconnect exists for Boston and Cambridge Public School students, particularly those of color. Cambridge has the highest concentration of its residents working in the innovation economy than any innovation cluster in the country. Yet, less than 5% of Cambridge’s African-American residents work in this sector. Only 29% of Cambridge’s black 9th graders move towards a college degree within six years of graduating high school and only 14% of Latino students have success. These figures are likely similar in Boston.
